Jahn Elementary School

Summary:

Jahn Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 291 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Jahn Elementary School faces significant challenges, with significantly lower test scores compared to surrounding high-performing schools like Coonley Elementary and Prescott Elementary. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 36.5% of Jahn students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 70.5% at Coonley and 79.5% at Prescott. In math, only 14% of Jahn students were proficient or better, compared to 59.5% at Coonley and 66.4% at Blaine. Jahn also has a very high chronic absenteeism rate of 41.2%, significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

The data suggests that Jahn Elementary's challenges may be linked to its high percentage of low-socioeconomic status students, with 50.52% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, compared to much lower rates at nearby schools. This, combined with the school's consistently low ranking within the Chicago Public Schools District 299, indicates that Jahn faces significant obstacles in providing a quality education to its students. However, the success of the surrounding high-performing schools demonstrates that there may be opportunities for Jahn to learn and improve.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There are 5 preschool classrooms and most of them are spacious and light-filled except for one. My child's classroom was in the south east corner of the basement in a room that was never actually meant to be used as a classroom. It was a literal storage room that was converted into a classroom with harsh lighting. It was probably a third of the size of the other classrooms, yet it had just as many students. The kids were packed in there with little room to move around and play. My child was hit and bullied by another student and the teachers were slow to respond. They never replied to emails so I was unsure if they were taking any steps to keep them apart. My child had a bathroom accident on the way home one day and through tears told me that she was afraid to tell her teacher when she had to use the bathroom because it wasn't the designated bathroom break time. I emailed and talked to the teacher about the incident, and weeks later the same thing happened again. My daughter again crying on the way home from school, still afraid to tell her teacher she needed to go to the bathroom. Her teacher always struck me as intimidating, never offering up a warm hello when we arrived at school. My daughter liked to bring a toy to drop off to show her teacher and not once did she respond with a "wow, that's great!" or "what's your doll's name?" or any kind of interest. She would tell my daughter flatly that the toy needed to be put in her backpack before she came into school. She never recognized that my child was trying to connect with her. The teacher sent me the results of a test with checkpoints that were gathered from August to November. According to the test, my daughter couldn't read or speak clearly. My daughter reads and speaks perfectly. She boldly orders her own food in restaurants and reads the menu herself. She has been reading since she was 3. When I asked about the test, her teacher admitted that she didn't actually test her for reading abilities and that she marked her as "doesn't speak clearly" because she is quiet in the classroom. This shocked me as my daughter has never been called quiet by anyone before and is typically characterized as bold, confident, even loud. She loves to talk to adults and people she's never met. She was quiet in her classroom because she was afraid of her teacher. We met with the principal twice and he wouldn’t move her to a different classroom. In January we transferred her to a new school where she thrived. Close Quote

Open Quote My granddaughter is in Kindergarten at Jahn Elementary and overall she is learning but the issue that my daughter have addressed to the teacher regarding my granddaughter is a bullying issue with another student that has not been given any attention and our next step it to take it to the principal. If nothing is done after that it will be taken to the Board of Education District Office. My granddaughter is African American and she is being bullied by a Hispanic student that tells her she is not very pretty because of the color of her skin and the texture of her hair. This racism have to stop and the excuse that the teacher gave for the young Hispanic girl behavior is that she is a only child which is not a good excuse. Something needs to be done and soon. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
