Hitch Elementary School

Summary:

Hitch Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with an enrollment of 502 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hitch Elementary is facing significant academic challenges, with high chronic absenteeism rates, low test scores, and subgroup performance well below state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 33.9% of Hitch students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 41.2% statewide and 30.5% in the district. In math, only 22.3% of Hitch students were proficient, compared to 28.4% statewide and 18.3% in the district. When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Wildwood Elementary and Beaubien Elementary, Hitch's performance is significantly lower.

Despite higher spending per student, Hitch Elementary's academic performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 626 out of 2,093 schools in 2013-2014 to 1,252 out of 2,067 schools in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school is struggling to keep up with the state's academic standards, and simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution. The school's challenges may be related to factors such as instructional practices, teacher quality, and student support services, as well as the high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter was bullied for 3 consecutive years. From third grade to 6th. Seems things weren’t resolved by administration or teachers. They just told her to do like a “turtle “ not sure what that meant. It changed when I told said I would call board of Ed and go to channel 5. Then the kids wouldn’t talk to her which was just as bad. She felt even worse. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
