Hayt Elementary School

Summary:

Hayt Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 887 students in grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, which is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299. The school faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism, low test scores, and disparities in performance across different student subgroups.

Hayt Elementary School has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.4% in 2019-2020 to 33.5% in 2023-2024, which is much higher than the district and state averages. The school's test scores are also generally lower than the district and state, with only 32.8% of students proficient or better in ELA and 15.6% in math, compared to 30.5% and 18.3% for the district, respectively. While African American and Hispanic students perform relatively well compared to their peers, Asian students and students with disabilities perform significantly worse.

Interestingly, Hayt Elementary School's performance is lower than nearby schools, such as Chappell Elementary School, Stone Elementary Scholastic Academy, and Peirce Elementary International Studies School, which have higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism, and better overall performance. The school's increased spending per student, from $11,638 in 2019-2020 to $16,689 in 2022-2023, has not translated into improved academic outcomes, suggesting that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
