Fuller Elementary School

Summary:

Fuller Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 317 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Fuller Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of Illinois elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a current ranking of 1551 out of 2067 schools.

One of the key challenges facing Fuller Elementary School is its high chronic absenteeism rate, which reached as high as 62.3% in the 2021-2022 school year, significantly higher than the district and state averages. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) exams, is also well below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 24.5% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 30.5% for the district and 41.2% for the state, and in Mathematics, the proficiency rate was just 6.1%, compared to 18.3% for the district and 28.4% for the state. The performance of specific student subgroups, such as female students and students with low socioeconomic status, is also concerning, with the school ranking in the bottom 25% of Illinois elementary schools for these groups.

When comparing Fuller Elementary School to nearby schools within the same district, there are some notable differences. For example, Bronzeville Classical Elementary School, which is less than a mile away, has significantly higher academic performance, with proficiency rates well above the district and state averages. This suggests that factors beyond just funding and district-level policies may be contributing to the challenges at Fuller Elementary School. While the school's performance has been consistently low, its ranking has fluctuated over the years, indicating that there may be opportunities for improvement. With relatively high spending per student, the resources are available, but they may not be effectively targeted or utilized to support the students of Fuller Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My absolute and honest opinion on this place is that it needs to be shut down. If there are new teachers and staff, then this place would have a chance to get better. As a dad, I'm concerned with carelessness towards the way the school is ran. The teachers pick and choose through students that they like. It's a favoritism game with all the teachers and staff. Someone warned me about putting my child into this school and I surely didn't think it would be this bad. The school's ONLY concern is attendance. My child could be dying and they still want them 15 minutes early to school. Everyone has different things going on in life and they should understand that, yet they only care if they are the school with the highest attendance rates. It's really sad. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
