Xavier Charter School

Summary:

Xavier Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in Twin Falls, Idaho, serving grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 672 students. The school has a diverse student population, with the racial makeup being 74.55% White, 18.75% Hispanic, 3.57% Asian, and smaller percentages of other racial groups.

Xavier Charter School consistently outperforms the state average in ISAT (Idaho Standards Achievement Test) scores across various subjects and grade levels, with 64.5% of students proficient or better in ISAT/Math for End of Course, compared to the state average of 34.6%. The school's performance is also higher than the Twin Falls District scores, indicating that Xavier Charter School is a high-performing school within its own district. Additionally, Xavier Charter School has had strong four-year graduation rates, ranging from 77.8% to 97.4% over the past five school years, significantly higher than the state average graduation rate. However, the school's percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 11.82% to 25.6%, is lower than the surrounding schools, such as Murtaugh Schools, Castleford School, and Valley School, which have higher percentages of students from low-income families.

The higher student-teacher ratio at Xavier Charter School, ranging from 20.2 to 20.3 over the past three school years, is also noteworthy, as it is higher than the surrounding schools, which have lower student-teacher ratios. This may indicate differences in staffing and class size, which could impact the school's ability to provide individualized attention and support to its students. Overall, Xavier Charter School appears to be a high-performing school that consistently outperforms the state and district averages in academic achievement and graduation rates, despite serving a more economically diverse student population compared to the surrounding schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Our experience has been positive and we as a family have been delighted to be part of the XCS family. My children have attended the schoolsince its inception and there have been some tough times with issues beyond the classroom. Regardless of what was happening the teachers have always focused on the students and my children have succeeded.

My oldest child who attended XCS has graduated and is successfully completeing college. She has stated that compared to many of her peers coming from other schools she has felt much more prepared. My other children are doing at XCS and when they stumble the teachers go above and beyond to help them improve and succeed. Close Quote

Open Quote For my daughter in the older elementary grade level Xavier wasn’t a bad option. Their classical education concept worked very well with keeping her challenged. There is a very high expectation for behavior, I would even call it business-like which is understandable when you have the classical curriculum. However, when my son entered into 1st grade, it seemed the behavior expectation from K to 1st was too great, to go from hands on activities, more interaction with peers to sitting at your desk being taught (quite a bit of lectures and some group work). I had an idea this wouldn’t work for him as during the first week, I received a phone call from his teacher that he used too many paper towels in the bathroom (approx. five). I clarified that he didn’t do anything bad with them, just used too many. His teacher did seem to try some techniques to keep him focused during lectures but it came to the point I never heard any positive feedback which led me to believe he never received any in class. I’ve since pulled my son from Xavier due to his increasing negative view of school, daily stomachaches to avoid going etc. and is now much happier at our neighborhood grade school.

My other issue with Xavier is their special ed program leaves something to be desired. Last spring, I inquired about my daughter (who is non-verbal autistic, no behavior issues) attending kindergarten. The special ed director at the time seemed very positive until I mentioned my daughter was non-verbal. I was then referred to our local school district. Upon hearing a change in directors, I again inquired via email about potentially having my daughter attend Xavier. After three days, I received a four paragraph response in legal-ease informing me of what my daughter is entitled to under federal law. I then asked if it would be possible to observe their current program in action but was extremely put off when I was told IF it were possible, I would need to arrange it myself with the head of schools.
All that being said, Xavier really is a good option if your child has an auditory learning style and no mental disabilities. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
