Priest River Junior High School

Summary:

Priest River Junior High School is a public middle school in Priest River, Idaho, serving 184 students in grades 7-8. The school stands out for its strong performance in English Language Arts, higher spending per student, and smaller class sizes, but faces challenges with chronic absenteeism and lags behind in Math and Science proficiency.

Compared to nearby Sandpoint Middle School and Timberlake Middle School, Priest River Junior High has a significantly higher percentage of white students (95.65%) and a higher rate of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (41.85%). While the school outperforms the Lake Pend Oreille School District and the state in English Language Arts, it lags behind in Math and Science proficiency.

Interestingly, Priest River Junior High spends significantly more per student ($12,279) than the nearby schools, but this higher spending does not seem to translate into consistently better academic outcomes. The school has, however, shown steady improvement in its statewide ranking, moving from the bottom quartile to the top half of Idaho middle schools. Additionally, the school's lower student-teacher ratio of 16.9 could be a contributing factor to its stronger performance in English Language Arts.

Open Quote I have found staff to be highly unprofessional. when having academic struggles and behavior struggles with son, tried to cooperate with staff to find solutions. My son transferred out of state with Sec. 504; school insisted they "do not have the resources", suspended my son for nearly 30 school days last year (2010-2011), and did NOTHING to help with problem. this parent had to take initiative to contact staff regarding issues. I have been told from numerous credible sources that this school has spread hateful and hurtful and most importantly, untrue rumors about me. I tried to cooperate with school, but they chose to make personal attacks on this parent instead. I took this problem all the way to the superintendent and school board with no positive results. My son has since been put on an IEP, but no academic support comes from the school. He's enrolled online for a few core classes, and a phone call from the counselor twice a week is all the support I get. In the end I, a single working parent of 4 children, lost my job due to too many phone calls and meetings regarding school issues. This has been my personal experience with this school. Others may have had different results. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
