Washington-Wilkes Middle School

Summary:

Washington-Wilkes Middle School is a public middle school in Washington, Georgia, serving 297 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Wilkes County School District, which is ranked 117 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $9,366 to $10,074 in recent years, and a student-teacher ratio comparable to the nearby Lincoln County Middle School, Washington-Wilkes Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to the state average in the Milestones Assessment across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) ranged from 19.4% to 44.2%, while the state average ranged from 39.8% to 41.6%. Similarly, in Mathematics, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 18.4% to 31.6%, compared to the state average of 34.7% to 43.7%. The school's performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 215 out of 559 Georgia middle schools in 2018-2019 to 381 out of 588 in 2023-2024.

The school's very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 91.92% to 94.22% in recent years, suggests that the student population faces significant socioeconomic challenges, which may be a contributing factor to the school's academic underperformance. This is in contrast with the nearby Lincoln County Middle School, which has a lower free and reduced-lunch rate of 57.36% in 2022-2023 and significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Open Quote My child has had to deal with bullying and favoritism the whole time they have attended middle school. The schools' principle does not address the issues and brushes you off or sends you to another person when you bring anything up. They are not honest about what really goes on in the school itself. The board of education is more concerned with how it appears then really educating our children and dealing with real issues. I know several parents that have had to pull their children out of the school system and homeschool them because of these issues. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
