Carver Middle School

Summary:

Carver Middle School is a public middle school located in Monroe, Georgia, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 801 students. The school is part of the Walton County School District, which is ranked 40 out of 203 districts in Georgia and is rated 4 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Carver Middle School consistently underperforms compared to the Walton County and Georgia state averages in the Milestones Assessment across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 29.3% to 34.1%, while the Walton County average was 42.1% to 45.3%, and the Georgia state average was 39.8% to 41.6%. The school has been ranked in the bottom half of Georgia middle schools for the past several years, consistently ranking between 301 and 394 out of around 550 schools, and has maintained a 2-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. Additionally, Carver Middle School has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 58.68% to 59.64% in recent years, which is notably higher than the district and state averages.

When comparing Carver Middle School to other nearby middle schools in the Walton County and Barrow County districts, the performance gap is quite significant. For example, Loganville Middle School and Youth Middle School, both in the Walton County district, consistently outperform Carver Middle School by 10-20 percentage points or more in academic proficiency across various subjects and grade levels. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Carver Middle School may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance, and a closer examination of the school's instructional practices, resource allocation, and support systems could help identify areas for improvement and targeted interventions to support student success.

Open Quote Carver gets a bad rap. This is an awesome school. Both of my kids went through and the low student/teacher ratio. The Connections (elective) teachers are the best and I never had a second thought about safety. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
