Westside High School

Summary:

Westside High School is a public high school in Augusta, Georgia, serving 999 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Richmond County School District, which is ranked 176 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Westside High School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia high schools over the past decade, with its statewide ranking declining from 206 in 2014-2015 to 428 in 2023-2024.

Westside High School faces significant challenges in academic performance, with students consistently underperforming compared to the Richmond County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 10.7% of Westside students were proficient or better in American Literature and Composition, compared to 20.1% in Richmond County and 42% statewide. The school's four-year graduation rate has also declined from 88.8% in 2019-2020 to 79.1% in 2021-2022, which is significantly lower than the state average. Additionally, Westside High School has a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 97.91% to 98% over the past few years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Interestingly, Westside High School's academic performance is significantly lower than that of nearby schools, such as Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School and Davidson Magnet School, which have much higher proficiency rates on the Milestones Assessments. This suggests that the challenges faced by Westside High School may be specific to the Richmond County School District and its overall educational system, as nearby Lakeside High School and Evans High School, which are part of the Columbia County School District, have significantly higher academic performance and graduation rates.

Open Quote This place sucks. The food is terrible and the teachers are mean. Do not come here if you expect respect because you don't get it here Close Quote

Open Quote Education at Westside is what the student wants it to be. If they are seeking a world class education the opportunities and quality of teacher needed for it to happen are there. Students wanting this quality of education need to be actively involved, need to have parent(s) actively involved, need to take as challenging of courses as possible and take the time to study/attend daily. If they want to play around and do the bare minimum and maybe or maybe not graduate, well that opportunity exists too. We have a diverse student population where everyone can find a group to identify with. We are large enough to allow independence, but small enough where most students know everyone in their class by senior year and most teachers are familiar with most students. We have a handful of teachers that should have been fired years ago that no one seems to be able to get rid of or help to improve. The teachers and administration do run this school, just ask the students! Much improvement in student behavior since 2010 when the county bussed students in across the district because we were the only one making AYP. We have opportunities for all to join numerous sports teams and we show more pride than any other Richmond County school. Our facility has had and continues to be updated. Students and teachers feel safe at this school. Our administration works hard to support the teachers, students and parents. Westside has a strong alumni in the professional community and many of our student's parents went here. Faculty openings are coveted positions in this county because it is a good school. The only comparisons in Richmond County are the magnet schools and the ib program at ARC, but they get to handpick their student body and kick them out when they do not perform well. Close Quote

Open Quote Westside high school is absolutely horrible. It offers a kindergarten level of education along with lack luster teaching from most teachers. The students walk around with attitudes and the mind set that they rule the school. The best thing to do for this high school is to tear it down. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
