Van Wert Elementary School

Summary:

Van Wert Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Rockmart, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 696 students. The school is part of the Polk County School District, which is ranked 134 out of 203 districts in Georgia and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Van Wert Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools, with a statewide ranking between 773 and 1078 over the past 10 years. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of this period, indicating it is performing significantly below the state average. The school's proficiency rates in the Georgia Milestones Assessments are consistently lower than the Polk County and Georgia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency rate was 26.4%, compared to 25.7% for Polk County and 38.4% for the state. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 77.87% to 85.38% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Bartow County and Paulding County districts, such as Euharlee Elementary, Union Elementary, and Northside Elementary, generally perform better academically, with higher proficiency rates and lower free/reduced lunch percentages. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and the school's lower per-student spending compared to the state average may be contributing factors to Van Wert Elementary's persistent challenges in improving student outcomes.

Open Quote Teachers are nice but don't feel that they are affective. We came from another school that is only ranked slightly higher and I saw a huge difference. They are not good at catering to each individual student. Ex. They get 5 words a week and once the week is over they move on even if a child doesn't know the word. We came from Dallas Elementary that had a different method. Each student had a book and was tested every morning. Once they memorized their set of words they could move on to their next set of words. My oldest daughter was on a 4th grade reading level by the end of kindergarten with this method. With vanwert my youngest was barely on a kendergarten reading level at end of school year with vanWert method. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
