Northside Elementary

Summary:

Northside Elementary is a public elementary school in Cedartown, Georgia, serving 530 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Polk County School District, which is ranked 134 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Northside Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the Polk County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessment, with only 39.4% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 48.2% statewide. The school has a low statewide ranking, placing in the bottom third of Georgia elementary schools, and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger. Northside Elementary also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 77.92% to 85.55% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Polk County district, such as Van Wert Elementary, Eastside Elementary, and Youngs Grove Elementary, all perform better than Northside Elementary on the Milestones Assessments. This suggests that Northside Elementary is an underperforming school within its own district. Despite spending more per student ($10,095 in 2018-2019) compared to nearby schools, Northside Elementary's performance has remained consistently low over the past several years, indicating a lack of significant improvement efforts or interventions to address the school's academic challenges.

Open Quote While I think that the teachers are trying to do the best that they can at Northside, this is a terrible school. We moved in the middle of the school year and my son was in 4th grade and was constantly teased, made fun of and bullied all through his time there. I was very disappointed with the lack of communication from the teachers with the parents. If I had to do it all over again, I'd take my son somewhere else. Even homeschooling would have been better than Northside. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
