Wesley Heights Elementary School

Summary:

Wesley Heights Elementary School is a public elementary school in Columbus, Georgia, serving 405 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Muscogee County School District, which is ranked 155 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Wesley Heights Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Georgia elementary schools over the past several years, with a statewide ranking between 990 and 1149 out of around 1,200-1,250 schools. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state. Wesley Heights Elementary consistently underperforms the Muscogee County and Georgia state averages on standardized assessments, with proficiency rates ranging from 15.1% to 30.4% in English Language Arts and 17.3% to 30.4% in Mathematics, well below the district and state averages.

The school's high poverty concentration, with over 96% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, is significantly higher than the surrounding schools. Despite the high poverty levels, Wesley Heights Elementary has relatively low per-student spending compared to some of the nearby schools, raising questions about whether the school is receiving adequate resources and funding to address the needs of its student population. The high student-teacher ratio at Wesley Heights also suggests potential challenges in providing individualized attention and support to students.

Open Quote I feel that Wesley Heights is less than satisfactory. My children are assigned to this school due to our location and I really wish we would of had more time to find a location to move to when we found out we were being relocated to this part of GA (military PCS). My kids did have wonderful teachers at this school last year my issues are really more with the managerial aspect of the school. The principal and the office staff. I have big issues when it comes to discipline and disruptions in school, obviously I can only control how my own children behave in school but there is not much done here at Wesley Heights to protect the children who do behave at school from missing out due to disruptive behaviors. My children's teachers often told me that much time was lost in the classroom due to having to place learning on hold to "take care of disruptive children". I often went to the school to volunteer and help out when and where I would and I saw first hand the children who act out and disrupt class. Nothing is done to stop the behavior and it seems as if the lack of parental support at the school has a negative effect on the disciplinary issues during school hours. Parent involvement needs to improve before anything will ever change for Wesley Heights. We will not be back this year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
