Dunleith Elementary School

Summary:

Dunleith Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Marietta, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 562 students. The school is part of the Marietta City School District, which is ranked 67 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. However, Dunleith Elementary School has seen a fluctuating performance over the years, with its statewide ranking ranging from 511 to 960 out of around 1,200-1,250 Georgia elementary schools, and a 2-3 star rating from SchoolDigger.

One of the key factors that differentiates Dunleith Elementary School is its high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 83.52% to 86.12% in recent years. This is significantly higher than the state and district averages, indicating a high-poverty student population. Additionally, the school consistently underperforms the Marietta City School District and the state of Georgia in the Milestones Assessment for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, with proficiency rates often 5-15 percentage points lower than the district and state averages. Despite having a higher per-student spending compared to the state average, ranging from $10,151 to $12,785 per student, Dunleith Elementary School also has larger class sizes, with a student-teacher ratio ranging from 11.9 to 12.6 students per teacher, compared to the nearby schools in the Marietta City and Cobb County districts, which have ratios around 9-11 students per teacher.

When comparing Dunleith Elementary School to other nearby schools, both within the Marietta City district and the Cobb County district, it becomes clear that Dunleith is underperforming academically. Schools like A.L. Burruss Elementary and Hickory Hills Elementary, which are also in the Marietta City district, have significantly higher test scores and statewide rankings than Dunleith. Despite the challenges, Dunleith Elementary School's higher per-student spending suggests that the school has the resources to potentially improve its academic performance, and identifying and addressing the root causes of the underperformance could help the school make meaningful progress.

Open Quote I love this school! Dunleith has a very energetic staff that creates a family environment for their students. Also, Dunleith provides numerous programs, such as Dual Language Immersion, Early Intervention, and Gifted Curriculum, to offer students an alternative approach to traditional education. Combined that with an active PTA that collaborates with community partners, Dunleith Elementary delivers the environment for academic success. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
