South Hart Elementary School

Summary:

South Hart Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 548 students in grades PK-5 in Hartwell, Georgia, which is part of the Hart County School District. The school generally performs better than the county and state averages on standardized tests, particularly in 5th grade English Language Arts and 4th grade Mathematics.

Compared to other elementary schools in the Hart County district, South Hart Elementary outperforms its peers, with 60.2% of 5th graders proficient in ELA compared to 45.8% at Hartwell Elementary and 43.9% at North Hart Elementary. However, when compared to schools in the neighboring Madison County and Franklin County districts, South Hart's performance is more mixed, with some higher-performing schools like Danielsville Elementary and Royston Elementary outpacing it in areas like Math and Science.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at South Hart Elementary, ranging from 56.18% to 63.5% over the past few years, suggests that the school serves a more economically disadvantaged population compared to some nearby schools. This may be a factor in the school's performance, as research has shown a correlation between poverty and academic achievement. However, the school has seen its statewide ranking and SchoolDigger star rating improve over the past decade, indicating that it is making progress and moving in the right direction.

Open Quote My children have attended South Hart for the last 5 years, I now have 3 children enrolled there (4th, 3rd, and PK). The staff is excellent, the Principal is top notch, and faculty are very professional. I love our school. If others speak badly of the school, it isn't the school that is the problem, it is the person speaking badly of the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
