Jenkins Elementary School

Summary:

Jenkins Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 754 students. The school is part of the Gwinnett County School District, which is ranked 65th out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Jenkins Elementary School's test scores on the Milestones Assessment are consistently lower than the Gwinnett County and Georgia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 27% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 42.1% in Gwinnett County and 38.4% statewide. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, from 292nd out of 1,205 Georgia elementary schools in 2016-2017 (4-star rating) to 797th out of 1,248 in 2023-2024 (2-star rating). Additionally, Jenkins Elementary School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 73.2% in 2020-2021 to 83.16% in 2022-2023, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages.

When comparing Jenkins Elementary School to the nearby schools in the Gwinnett County district, it becomes evident that Jenkins is underperforming. For instance, Dyer Elementary School, located just 3.05 miles away, consistently outperforms Jenkins in test scores, with over 60% of students proficient or better in most subject areas, compared to Jenkins' 25-40% proficiency rates. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Jenkins Elementary School's performance has been declining over the years, which is a concerning trend that requires further investigation.

Open Quote If you have a child with a learning disabilityDO NOT come to the Gwinnett County School District. Their approach and unwillingness to initiate individualized strategies will have your struggling student left behind. Furthermore, the school and distict has a CLOSED DOOR unwritten ploicy. Most district employees will not call you back and is almost impossible to get anyone at the district to actually meet with you. Parent perspctive's are dismissed. They focus more on less intervention which probalbly keeps down cost, while they dont have staff that are trained out side of the district Special Eduction training. No one cares enough at this district to help your child, they will decrease interventions by duration and frequncy while not being trained in new strategies is just a loss to the child. IF YOUR CHILD HAS A LEARNING DIABILITY DO NOT COME TO THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, YOU WILL BE ON YOUR OWN! Even the Parent Liason that works for the district recommened "Going outside the district to get help for your child, as she did" Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
