Benefield Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 1,243 students. The school is part of the Gwinnett County School District, which is ranked 65th out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Benefield Elementary School's academic performance, as measured by the Milestones Assessment, is generally lower than the Gwinnett County and Georgia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 27.6% to 33.5%, compared to 42.1% to 53.4% for Gwinnett County and 37% to 48.2% for the state. Similarly, in Mathematics, Benefield's proficiency rates ranged from 35.6% to 49.8%, while Gwinnett County and the state had higher rates. Additionally, Benefield Elementary School's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 331 out of 1,231 Georgia elementary schools in 2013-2014 (4-star rating) to a ranking of 680 out of 1,248 schools in 2023-2024 (2-star rating). The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 71.12% to 76.51% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages.

When comparing Benefield Elementary School to the nearby schools in the Gwinnett County district, it becomes evident that Benefield's academic performance is generally lower than its peers. For example, Craig Elementary School, located just 3.66 miles away, consistently outperforms Benefield in all subject areas and grade levels, with proficiency rates ranging from 61.1% to 80.1% in English Language Arts and 62.4% to 71.7% in Mathematics. These findings suggest that Benefield Elementary School may need to implement targeted strategies to address the academic gaps and support its economically disadvantaged student population.

Open Quote When a teacher like Mrs. Swisher, fifth grade, chooses Tupac Shakur as a role model for her class for Black History Month and puts a picture of him wearing the red bandana (a sign of the gang he represented) on her class room door I have to question her and the principals judgement. Even though he was a good artist he was a gang member that objectified women by calling them bhes and wh++es and was shot down in the streets by rival gang members. Is this a teacher you want teaching your children? A teacher that threatens her students with "what goes on in my class room stays in my class room". What is she trying to hide? If she were a man would parents worry more about this kind of behavior around children? Also her class room is a fire hazard with no clear way for children to escape in an emergency. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
