Magill Elementary School

Summary:

Magill Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Loganville, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 1,274 students. The school is part of the Gwinnett County School District, which is ranked 65th out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Magill Elementary School consistently underperforms compared to the Gwinnett County and Georgia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas in the Milestones Assessments. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 18.3% (3rd grade) to 37.3% (5th grade), compared to the Gwinnett County averages of 42.1% to 53.4%, and the Georgia state averages of 38.4% to 48.2%. Additionally, Magill Elementary School has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 60.5% to 71.51% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite the higher per-student spending at Magill Elementary School, ranging from $8,199 to $9,642 per student, the school's academic performance lags behind the nearby schools, such as Starling Elementary, which had proficiency rates ranging from 48.7% to 66.8% in English Language Arts and 57.2% to 66.8% in Mathematics.

The lower academic performance at Magill Elementary School presents an opportunity for the school and district to identify and address the specific challenges faced by the students, potentially through targeted interventions, professional development for teachers, or adjustments to the curriculum and instructional practices. The higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students and the higher per-student spending suggest that there may be opportunities to improve the school's performance through more effective allocation and utilization of resources to support student learning and achievement.

Open Quote This school is attentive to the needs of individual students while encouraging a sense of community/belonging. Magill is family oriented and expects all students to strive for excellence. High standards are set providing for a great foundation to a solid education. A strong parent involvement is expected and encouraged making for great success all the way around. Three of our children have attended this school and we wouldn't send them anywhere else. This is a great public school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
