Bethesda Elementary School

Summary:

Bethesda Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 1,148 students. The school is part of the Gwinnett County School District, which is ranked 65th out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bethesda Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the Gwinnett County and Georgia state averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in 2023-2024, only 29.3% of 3rd graders, 30.8% of 4th graders, and 48.7% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the Gwinnett County averages of 42.1%, 42.3%, and 53.4%, respectively. Additionally, Bethesda Elementary has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 75.57% to 78.05% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average and indicates a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When comparing Bethesda Elementary to the nearby schools in the Gwinnett County district, it becomes clear that Bethesda is underperforming academically. For example, Gwin Oaks Elementary, which is only about 2 miles away, consistently outperforms Bethesda on the Milestones Assessments, with over 60% of students proficient or better in ELA, Math, and Science. Bethesda Elementary's performance on the Milestones Assessments has also declined over the past few years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 318th out of 1,209 Georgia elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 582nd out of 1,248 in 2023-2024. This trend is concerning and suggests that the school may be facing challenges in effectively educating its students.

Open Quote My son has attended Bethesda for the last 4 years and I have nothing but great things to say. As soon as you walk through the door everyone you talk to is friendly and willing to help. I was not asked to write this but felt that I should. The DSL program is also great. Look it up. Thank you FOR ALL YOU DO! Close Quote

Open Quote BE WARNED! The principal is very hands off and nonchalant as it relates to instruction and discipline. Bullies control the building, teachers' hands are tied, and administrators are "working on things". My daughter has been stabbed, punched, and spat on since September, but they are "working on it." About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
