Duluth High School

Summary:

Duluth High School is a public high school serving 2,644 students in grades 9-12 in Duluth, Georgia, which is part of the Gwinnett County School District, the largest school district in Georgia and the 13th largest in the United States.

While Duluth High School has a history of strong academic performance, with test scores generally higher than the state averages, the school faces some challenges. Its test scores and graduation rates are lower than the Gwinnett County averages, and its statewide ranking has declined from the top 80 high schools in Georgia to the top 140-174 over the past five years. This suggests that the school may need to focus on supporting students and improving its academic offerings to keep pace with the top-performing schools in the area, such as Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology and Paul Duke STEM High School, which consistently outperform Duluth High School on test scores and graduation rates.

Additionally, Duluth High School has a relatively high percentage of students (over 50%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a diverse student population with varying levels of economic resources. This suggests a need for additional support services and resources to help all students succeed. Collaboration with neighboring high-performing schools, both within the Gwinnett County district and in the Fulton County district, could provide valuable insights and best practices to help Duluth High School enhance its educational offerings and student outcomes.

Open Quote This is my first year at Duluth High, my son is in the 9th grade. I often email his teaching team about his progress and they always reply immediately to my emails. I have watched his grades, studied materials and classwork throughout the year and he is steadily succeeding. His teachers will notify me if there is any issues with his class performance. My son has been promoted to the honors English class.
I enjoy the racial makeup of the school, it is 25% equal across the board. It is 25% African-American, 25% Caucasian, 25% Asian and 25% Hispanic. The PTA is great and there are lots of opportunity to volunteer. I have volunteered twice this year and witness the students interacting with one another. The children seemed grouped according to interest and not ethnicity.
There are several issues that have to be stated along with the positive. The school's football program is struggling but my son, who plays football wanted to stay even after being offered chances of going to private schools. He believes in the coaches. You have to contact your child's teacher at least once a month. This communicates to them that you are concern and involve. You can not leave the school responsible for your child's success. I do not enjoy where the school is located, down in a little hole. Traffic is crazy dropping off in the morning. It takes me 10 mins to drop off starting at Buford and Brock. I don't know about the evening because he catches the bus home. Finally, there is drug activity, so you should truly be speaking to your child about saying no to drugs during their 8th grade year.
I only gave 3 stars because of the football program, hopefully when we graduate, I can give five stars. Duluth is a great school and we are wildcats for life. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
