Bear Creek Middle School

Summary:

Bear Creek Middle School is a public middle school located in Fairburn, Georgia, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,108 students. The school is part of the Fulton County School District, which is ranked 57th out of 203 districts in Georgia and is rated 4 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Despite being part of a relatively high-performing district, Bear Creek Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to the Fulton County and Georgia state averages in various Milestones Assessment subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates were significantly lower than the county and state in English Language Arts (29.1% vs. 55.4% and 41.6%), Mathematics (11.7% vs. 46.9% and 34.7%), and Science (10.9% vs. 31.4% and 25.6%). The school has been ranked in the bottom half of Georgia middle schools for the past several years, with a ranking of 447 out of 588 schools in the 2023-2024 school year, and has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade.

However, the school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (100% in the 2022-2023 school year) suggests that the school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population, which likely contributes to its overall academic challenges. When compared to nearby schools, such as Sandtown Middle School, which is also in the Fulton County district, Bear Creek Middle School has significantly lower proficiency rates and a lower statewide ranking. Despite these challenges, the school has shown strong performance in Algebra I, outperforming the Fulton County and Georgia state averages, suggesting it may have the potential to improve in other subject areas with the right interventions and support.

Open Quote Bear Creek is a very dis-functional school. A lot of bad students, and teachers who are there just to get money. Orientation was a mess 2010-2011 year! Kids put on teams they weren't suppose to be on, kids switching homerooms more than twice, and more. There are so many good students who don't get recognized because there are so much other problems to focus on than acknowledging good students. The counseling is really bad. In my 6th grade year, I was getting bullied. Physically, mentally, and emotionally by 4 boys and all the counselor gave them was silent lunch. I found that quite stupid because what problem can that solve. The counselor didn't even call the parents! Bear Creek is not the best school to send your child. They also haven't made AYP for a long time! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
