S. L. Lewis Elementary School

Summary:

S. L. Lewis Elementary School is a public elementary school located in College Park, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 538 students. The school is part of the Fulton County School District, which is ranked 57th out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student compared to the state average, S. L. Lewis Elementary School has consistently underperformed academically. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are significantly lower than the Fulton County and Georgia state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 19% of 3rd graders, 22.5% of 4th graders, and 39.2% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 50.3%, 51.5%, and 59.6% for Fulton County, respectively. The school's performance in Mathematics and Science follows a similar trend, and it has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools over the past 10 years.

The high free and reduced lunch rate of 100% at S. L. Lewis Elementary School suggests that the school serves a predominantly low-income student population, which is likely a significant factor contributing to the school's academic challenges. When compared to nearby schools in the Fulton County district, such as Lee Elementary, Campbell Elementary, and Feldwood Elementary, it is clear that S. L. Lewis Elementary School is underperforming academically, despite its relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student.

Open Quote Horrible administration and too many kids with behavior issues that are not addressed. The administration is very disrespectful to the teachers. Almost the whole staff is leaving this year. The school is a joke and the whole admin team needs to be removed especially the principal and assistant principal. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
