Lakeside Middle School

Summary:

Lakeside Middle School is a high-performing public middle school located in Cumming, Georgia, serving 1,477 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Forsyth County School District, which is ranked 10th out of 203 districts in Georgia and is rated 5 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Lakeside Middle School consistently ranks among the top middle schools in Georgia, with a statewide ranking of 17th out of 588 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. The school's academic performance is exceptional, with significantly higher proficiency rates compared to the Forsyth County and Georgia averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, the school's Algebra I proficiency rate reached an impressive 96.9% in 2023-2024, far surpassing the Forsyth County (65.1%) and Georgia (44%) averages. Similarly, the school's English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency rates are also significantly higher than the district and state averages.

While Lakeside Middle School stands out for its exceptional performance, nearby schools in the Forsyth County district, such as Vickery Creek Middle School and South Forsyth Middle School, also demonstrate strong academic results. Additionally, the school's relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 7.85% to 8.56% over the past three school years, suggests that it serves a relatively affluent community, which may contribute to the school's high academic performance.

Open Quote Unfortunately, this school has the makings of a great place, but the apathetic administration & unruly students ensure that this doesn't happen. Our child tells us of many instances where classes are chaotic, and teachers do nothing to intervene. A few of the teachers seem to be interested in the students success, but most are lackluster, at best. Some of the teachers express their personal opinions regarding politics and races/religions, which is appropriate teachers should not attempt to sway students with their personal opinions in any way. Additionally, students' attitudes and behaviors are unacceptable in general there are students screaming swear words and racial epithets in the hallways daily, as well as making lewd sexual comments (which reflects poorly on the parents, but should NOT be tolerated at school). And...the dress code is a JOKE. Many of the students are half-naked, with their buttocks hanging out of their "shorts" (more like underwear!), and, other articles of inappropriate clothing are worn regularly, (VERY tight clothing, like revealing shirts). WHERE ARE THE ADMINISTRATORS?? Are they that AFRAID of parents that they don't send these kids home to change clothes?? Also, kids fight in the hallways and are very disruptive students jump on their desks, and do not get disciplined. This school year, our child has spent a copious amount of time with substitute teachers that are very rude & disrespectful, and hardly speak English. Is there no screening of these "teachers"?? We have been extremely disappointed by this school, especially since the test scores are consistently high. We can only figure that the parents of these high-scoring students make their kids study constantly. Lastly, we are astonished by the fact that students never have homework how does this prepare students for high school (much less college??). With over 1200 students, I can only surmise that students complete "homework" in class so that the teachers do not have to grade anything from home. Otherwise...a TERRIBLE idea. This does NOT promote self-regulation, or self-discipline, nor does it enforce time-management!! Overall...NOT a great place to send your kid. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
