The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The Champion Middle Theme School consistently outperforms the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages in various Milestones Assessment subjects, with 60.4% of students proficient or better in Algebra I, compared to 24.2% in DeKalb County and 44% statewide. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 100% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools and the district average. Additionally, the school has seen a steady increase in spending per student, from $8,987 in 2016-2017 to $11,112 in 2018-2019, which is higher than the state average, and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 15.6 to 16.2 over the past three school years.

Despite the district's overall low ranking, The Champion Middle Theme School has maintained a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years, suggesting the school is performing well compared to other middle schools in the state. When comparing The Champion Middle Theme School to nearby schools in the same district, such as Miller Grove Middle School and Mary McLeod Bethune Middle School, it generally outperforms them in test scores and other metrics. The higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio at The Champion Middle Theme School may contribute to its relatively strong performance, even in the face of significant socioeconomic challenges faced by its student population.

Open Quote We just completed 6th grade - our first year at Champion. I must say that I was very pleased with our experience there. I had a great core of 6th grade teachers. Communication was great - we consistently got communication about events at the school and due dates of activities. My son has done very well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
