Stephenson Middle School

Summary:

Stephenson Middle School is a public middle school located in Stone Mountain, Georgia, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 812 students. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Stephenson Middle School has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Georgia middle schools, ranking between 419-466 out of 542-588 schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Stephenson Middle School's test scores are significantly lower than the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 26.1% of 6th graders, 27.6% of 7th graders, and 39.2% of 8th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 32.5%, 31.9%, and 37.2% in DeKalb County, respectively. The school's math proficiency rates are even lower, ranging from 12.5% to 29.1% across the grades, compared to 19.8% to 28.9% in DeKalb County. Additionally, Stephenson Middle School has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 100% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

Despite the higher per-student spending at Stephenson Middle School compared to nearby schools, the school's academic outcomes remain significantly lower. This raises questions about how the funding is being allocated and utilized to support student learning. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio suggests that there may be opportunities to provide more individualized attention and support to students, but the consistently low test scores indicate that additional strategies and interventions are needed to improve academic achievement.

Open Quote Teachers at Stephenson Middle do not support the kids! Never anything positive to say to them. Teachers display outwardly that they don't want to be around the kids. They don't keep up with assignments in parent portal. They don't support the PTSA AND they don't try to engage kids in active learning. By the way they absolutely don't support their student athletes. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
