Henderson Mill Elementary School

Summary:

Henderson Mill Elementary School is a public elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia, serving 506 students in grades PK-5 and part of the DeKalb County School District.

While the school was once ranked 369 out of 1,233 Georgia elementary schools in 2015-2016, its performance has declined in recent years, dropping to a ranking of 817 out of 1,248 in 2023-2024. The school's test scores in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are consistently below the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 5th-grade proficiency rates were 43.5% in ELA, 20.3% in Mathematics, and 24.6% in Science, significantly lower than the county and state. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students (66.21%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a high concentration of students from low-income families.

Compared to nearby schools, such as GLOBE Academy Charter School I, Oak Grove Elementary School, and Livsey Elementary School, Henderson Mill Elementary School is underperforming in several key areas, including test scores and overall school ratings. This concerning trend in the school's performance suggests that the leadership and the DeKalb County School District should closely examine the challenges facing the school and implement targeted strategies to improve the educational outcomes for its students.

Open Quote We pulled our rising 3rd-grader from a top-rated language immersion program in Dekalb County to attend Henderson Mill Elementary School.

SO MANY positive experiences have come from our time at HMES friends that have become family, a community that consists of members that care and respect each other, and teachers and staff that nurture each child's true learning potential.

Whether you have a school-aged child or are a property owner in this school district, I highly encourage you to take a tour of this school to see for yourself the year-round living labs, art, and learning projects that are taking place. The dedication of the teachers and staff is unsurpassed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
