Midvale Elementary School

Summary:

Midvale Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Tucker, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 437. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Midvale Elementary consistently outperforms the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Midvale's 5th-grade ELA proficiency was 48.1% compared to 40.8% for DeKalb County and 48.2% for the state. Additionally, Midvale has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 49.12% to 54.23% over the past few years, which is higher than the state average. However, the school has a higher per-student spending, ranging from $13,240 to $15,812, and a lower student-teacher ratio, ranging from 9.6 to 11 students per teacher, compared to nearby schools.

While Midvale Elementary outperforms the district and state averages, some nearby schools, such as Briarlake Elementary and Livsey Elementary, have significantly higher proficiency rates in both ELA and Mathematics. These schools also have lower free/reduced lunch rates and higher per-student spending, suggesting that socioeconomic factors and resource allocation may play a role in academic achievement. Despite these differences, Midvale Elementary has maintained a consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years, indicating a stable level of academic performance.

Open Quote Surprised to see the low overall rating here, I bring my three kids here through the school choice program and I find Midvale to be a great school. One of my older children is in the gifted program and is challenged at just the right level, my other two are also doing well while getting to explore a diverse range of subjects and meet a diverse range of friends. The school is well organized and the teachers/staff are caring and professional. Close Quote

Open Quote Midvale Elementary School was a fantastic learning environment for my son. He came from a private school and he loved Midvale from the moment he arrived. His teachers were beyond amazing, the diversity of the school is phenomenal, and he wishes he could stay there for 6th grade as well. No school is perfect, so if you're looking for perfection this is not it. I will say that I have been more than pleased with the education he received while he was there. Yes, he excelled on the CRCT and his grades were great as well. Take all of this statistical information with a grain of salt because even a school with a ranking of 10 may not be a good fit for your child. Always visit and stay involved! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
