Smoke Rise Elementary School

Summary:

Smoke Rise Elementary School is a public elementary school in Stone Mountain, Georgia, serving 530 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Smoke Rise Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessment, with proficiency rates in 3rd grade ELA and Math well below the county and state levels. The school has a low statewide ranking, placing between 515 and 1001 out of 1,200-1,250 Georgia elementary schools over the past 10 years, and currently ranks 761 out of 1,248 schools with a 2-star rating. Additionally, Smoke Rise has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.85% to 70.94% over the past 3 years, significantly higher than the state average.

Smoke Rise Elementary's performance is generally lower than that of nearby schools, such as Livsey Elementary and DeKalb Agriculture Technology and Environment School, which have higher test scores, rankings, and lower free/reduced lunch rates. The school's declining performance over the past 10 years, with its ranking dropping and its rating decreasing, suggests that targeted interventions and strategies are needed to improve student achievement, such as focusing on teacher quality, curriculum alignment, and addressing the needs of economically disadvantaged students.

Open Quote Ms. Pamela McCloud is on the right track to restore Smokerise to a wonderful DeKalb school! Smokerise is an awesome area, with great teachers and students. Close Quote

Open Quote I was involved at the school as a community member. There are some very caring and wonderful teachers but unfortunately the school is run so poorly that if you are not lucky enough to get one of those teachers, you are in for a bad year. The students are poorly supervised and education is not a priority. The amount of movie watching (and I am not talking about educational films) is out of control. Close Quote

Open Quote Compared to other schools in the district this school is great. I find the staff to be very caring and helpful. The afterschool programs here are great. They have spanish club robotics and chess available. My child is thriving in this environment. I pulled him out of another school and stepped out on faith by putting him at smokerise in the middle of the school year in 2nd grade. I have not looked back and i am ever so grateful. The teachers are seasoned professionals, not a bunch of kids fresh out of school and so far the teachers my son has had have been at this school since their kids were in school. There are lots of activities for families and they make parental involvement very easy...i believe its mandatory to do a certain amt of hours, im not sure how many bc there are so many opportunities you just get it done. Whats great is that members of the community still volunteer at this school and they dont even have kids at the school anymore! I wish i didnt have to pull my son out of this school, but I'm moving to a different county, so he must go. If you are an involved parent, this is a great school! Close Quote

Open Quote Very ineffective and non-responsive administration. Unfriendly staff. Many teachers discourage parental involvement. Charter school for 2 years now, yet, no change in school other than name. Administration not promoting parent interaction as dictated by the charter. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
