Fairington Elementary School

Summary:

Fairington Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Lithonia, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 546 students. Unfortunately, this school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Georgia elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger indicating very poor academic performance.

Fairington Elementary's academic struggles are significant, with proficiency rates on the Georgia Milestones assessments that are far below state and district averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 20.8% of 3rd graders, 15.9% of 4th graders, and 28.8% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to state averages of 38.4%, 37%, and 48.2%, respectively. The school's performance in Mathematics and Science is even more concerning, with proficiency rates well below 20% in many grade levels. This pattern of underperformance has been consistent over the past several years.

While Fairington Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending than the state average, these factors have not translated into improved academic outcomes. Interestingly, the nearby schools in the DeKalb County School District, such as Rainbow Elementary, Marbut Elementary, and Flat Rock Elementary, generally outperform Fairington Elementary on state assessments, while the nearby Leadership Preparatory Academy charter school significantly outperforms the local public schools. Addressing the challenges at Fairington Elementary will require a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to improve student learning and achievement.

Open Quote I was in 5th grade there and was called names and picked on the whole time but yet nothing was done about it the kids are non stop cussing and fighting the lunch room has roaches the gym teacher was putting his hands on kids yet none of the teachers or princeibles cared... They can not keep their kids in order teachers are lazy and cuss also.. and this is coming from a student.... If you are sending your kids to this school you might as well send them to a dumpster because that's with this school is..... coming from a true student who had to go through half the school year being called names and deal with people hitting me and with my parents calling the school to complain they said it would stop but still never did!!!!! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
