Chapel Hill Middle School

Summary:

Chapel Hill Middle School is a public middle school in Decatur, Georgia, serving 692 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 school districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Chapel Hill Middle School consistently outperforms the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages in several key test score metrics, including Algebra I/Coordinate Algebra End of Course (around 80% proficiency compared to 21.9-24.2% for the county and 26.4-44% for the state) and 8th Grade English Language Arts (35.8% to 40.2% proficiency compared to 37.2-37.2% for the county and 42.1-44.7% for the state). However, the school's performance has declined over time, dropping from a statewide ranking of 346 out of 539 Georgia middle schools in 2016-2017 to 455 out of 588 in 2023-2024, and its SchoolDigger rating has dropped from 2 stars to 1 star.

While Chapel Hill Middle School outperforms the county and state averages, it still lags behind the top-performing nearby school, Wadsworth Magnet School for High Achievers, which consistently achieves proficiency rates above 90% in core subjects. Additionally, Chapel Hill Middle School has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 71.19% to 100% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state and national averages. This high percentage of economically disadvantaged students may contribute to the school's relatively lower academic performance compared to more affluent areas.

Open Quote The school's poor reputation is undeserved. There are a lot of positives here. The teachers are both nurturing and challenging and are equally concerned about character development and academic achievement. They recognize and try to maximize students' potential and assign reasonable consequences and rewards. Thus far, I have no regrets about not sending my child to Champion. He is receiving a quality education in his own neighborhood. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
