Smyrna Elementary School

Summary:

Smyrna Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 904 students in grades PK-5 in Smyrna, Georgia, which is part of the Cobb County School District. While the district is ranked 52 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating, Smyrna Elementary's academic performance has been consistently below the Cobb County and state averages across grades and subjects.

For example, in 2023-2024, only 51% of 5th-grade students at Smyrna Elementary were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 57.9% in Cobb County and 48.2% statewide. In mathematics, just 37% of 5th-graders at Smyrna Elementary were proficient or better, compared to 49.1% in Cobb County and 41% statewide. The school's performance has declined over the past few years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 707 in 2018-2019 to 494 in 2023-2024. This underperformance is significant, as Smyrna Elementary lags behind nearby schools like King Springs Elementary and Teasley Elementary, which have higher proficiency rates and statewide rankings.

One potential factor contributing to Smyrna Elementary's academic challenges is its relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, at 53.54% in 2022-2023. This is significantly higher than the nearby schools of King Springs Elementary (20.7%) and Teasley Elementary (29.35%), but lower than some other nearby schools like Norton Park Elementary (80.24%) and Belmont Hills Elementary (88.89%). Research has shown that socioeconomic status can be a significant factor in student achievement, and schools serving more disadvantaged populations often face additional challenges. Despite these challenges, Smyrna Elementary's relatively stable funding and student-teacher ratios suggest that there may be opportunities for improvement through targeted interventions and support.

Open Quote I worked in Smyrna as a substitute and had a grandson at the school. I have a PhD in Educational Policy Studies and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and worked as a certified classroom observer for several years. It is insightful that of the 4 times I've left teacher feedback during my 2 years of subbing in APS and Cobb County Schools, 3 of them have been negative comments at Smyrna. These negative reviews were not the result of student behavior but because of what I observed from co-teachers in the classroom. As a grandparent, teachers and staff were not responsive to the needs of my grandson and daughter to be removed from the DLI program. It is known when students struggle academically they can easily become behavior problems. The principal refused to meet with my daughter despite several requests. In 40 years as a parent and educator, I've never heard of such. I'm sure there are a lot of good, dedicated teachers at Smyrna as at any school, but in my encounters, staff, administration, and teachers have been questionable in their professionalism. It is little wonder this school with the beautiful new edifice ranks as low as it does with declining test scores. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter attends Smyrna Elementary School. This school is very impressive with the professionalism and dedication to the student's Success. Mr. Ward the Principal truly cares for this staff and students. We are so luck to have him. The School works hard to assist the community. The students work hard to learn all aspects of bettering themselves as well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
