Austell Elementary School

Summary:

Austell Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 386 students in grades PK-5 in Austell, Georgia, which is part of the Cobb County School District. Despite being part of a district ranked 52 out of 203 in the state, Austell Elementary has consistently been rated 2 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger over the past several years.

Austell Elementary faces significant academic challenges, with test scores on the Georgia Milestones Assessment that are significantly lower than the Cobb County and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 31.7% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 48.2% in Cobb County and 38.4% statewide. Additionally, Austell Elementary has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 75.91% to 81.61% over the past few years, much higher than the district and state averages. Despite spending more per student ($12,422 in 2018-2019) than nearby schools, Austell Elementary's academic outcomes are significantly worse.

Interestingly, some of the nearby schools in the Cobb County district, such as Clarkdale Elementary and Hendricks Elementary, perform significantly better on state assessments, with higher proficiency rates and higher SchoolDigger rankings. Additionally, the only non-district school analyzed, D.E.L.T.A. STEAM Academy, a public charter school, outperforms Austell Elementary and the other nearby district schools on most academic measures, despite having a similar high-poverty student population.

Open Quote I have a 5year old 1st year here and Its funny how on sneak a peek day everyone is so friendly and smiling and staff wanting the parents so involved. My son first day I sat in class with him just to get the feel of the other children around him and his teachers and atmosphere. I advise his teacher a head of time the type of mother I am and the time and days I would be at the school. My plan was to sit for the 1st day and 2nd day leave after lunch and 3rd day just come for lunch. The 2nd day I thought the assist principal was coming to introduce herself however I was getting that they only try to allow parents to see there kids for 30 mins. SO instead of hearing my concerns I requested something in writing since I didn't read the policy of the school. She was more worried about the policy than my concern for my son. I understand how other kids want their parents and let the child get adjusted however I don't just people words without getting to know them and the reaction I feel. After my whole day I can say I see why Cobb county policy is 1 hour. I seen so much in a 6 hour day. K teachers more worried about the kids staying on a green squared than having their shoes tie while walking to the lunch room. teachers using their fingers to snap at the kids to get them in order. some k teachers a re too old and sat in their ways to be teaching kids so youthful with energy. I understand letting the kids adjust but there was no need to know list sent home doing registration on what your child should be able to do before K grade. The teachers do not have enough time or patience doing lunch to help the kids correctly pick there items. Its like a buffet. If golden corral advise all children under 10 should be supervise with adult how are 5 years old supposed to know. I spoke with the principal and I advise him I respect the policy and guidelines however another or a school with a 2star did not think things through all the way with 5 & 6 year's old. I have a friend who mother teachers K and the other teacher in her room don't like her to talk to the kids. I can say my feelings for both his teacher also change because clearly there was a problem with me being in my son class and instead of talking to me they waited until I was gone. as a mother and a woman you only get 1 time. But I can say I see my son is learning but I have a GPS on my child and this week I recv a text and a call that after 8/20 parents aren't allowed to walk their kids to their class room. I like to know my child made it to his last location I drop him off at. as a parent there's no much time away from apparent I feel like there should be cameras or 2way mirrors for the k and 1st grade. I can say I am doing my home work now to move my son to Marietta school or private school too many kids to 2 teachers Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
