Brumby Elementary School

Summary:

Brumby Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Marietta, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 973 students. The school is part of the Cobb County School District, which is ranked 52 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the district's overall strong performance, Brumby Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to the Cobb County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessments for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 26.5% of 3rd graders, 15.8% of 4th graders, and 33.3% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 48.2%, 46%, and 57.9% for Cobb County, respectively. Additionally, Brumby Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 67.31% to 70.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Mount Bethel Elementary (3.38%) and Sope Creek Elementary (6.95%).

Despite the higher per-student spending at Brumby Elementary School compared to the state average and some nearby schools, the continued underperformance suggests that these resources may not be effectively utilized or targeted to address the specific needs of the school's population. The challenges faced by Brumby Elementary may be unique to the school and its specific student population, as nearby schools in the Cobb County district that serve more affluent populations consistently outperform Brumby on the Milestones Assessments.

Open Quote This school has some serious issues. In second grade, the use of profanity is widespread. There is little to no communication with the parents and my 2 smart kids are being dragged down by it. I've never really wanted private schools as I never had one but after this experience, we are actively looking to get the heck out. Close Quote

Open Quote This school rates one of the lowest in Cobb. I can see why. My son had one of the most disorganized flighty teachers I've ever met. None of my wife nor my request for the teacher to contact us about his school work was answered. Also the school gender separates the kids from 3rd grade on. Very bad idea when the teacher can't even keep her things straight to control a room full of boys. Can't wait to move to a new district. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is horrible. Communication to parents is non existent, most of the office staff are not helpful or organized. My son is not challenged at all and constantly tells me they are still teaching things he already learned in the 3rd grade before we moved to Marietta. In the 2 years he has attended (4th & 5th grade) he has not done any big projects, they have not had any science fairs and very few educational events, yet they make sure they have movie nights and skate nights every few weeks. I can not wait for this year to be over. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
