Murdock Elementary School

Summary:

Murdock Elementary School is a high-performing public elementary school in Marietta, Georgia, serving 902 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Cobb County School District. The school has consistently been one of the top-performing elementary schools in Georgia, maintaining a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for exceptional academic achievement.

Murdock Elementary School significantly outperforms the Cobb County and Georgia state averages in standardized test scores, with 79.7% of 3rd graders, 74.4% of 4th graders, and 82.8% of 5th graders scoring proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to just 48.2% and 38.4% at the district and state levels, respectively. The school also has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 5.68% to 7.76%, and spends more per student, from $8,278 to $9,455, than many nearby schools. Additionally, Murdock Elementary maintains a low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.6 to 14.8 students per teacher.

While Murdock Elementary School outperforms the district and state, it also outshines many of the nearby schools in the Cobb County district, such as East Side Elementary, Kincaid Elementary, and Rocky Mount Elementary, which, while still high-performing, lag behind Murdock Elementary in academic achievement. This disparity raises questions about educational equity within the district and the factors that contribute to Murdock Elementary's exceptional performance.

Open Quote I sent two sons to Murdock Elementary. The curriculum was appropriately rigorous. The teachers were, at the very least, solid, and several were excellent. The principal is very hands on. Overall, both of my boys had a great experience at Murdock and recall their time there with great fondness. Close Quote

Open Quote Not a great experience with the teacher. (2013-14 school year) Spoke to the Principal about it and she assured me that she would speak to the teacher. I called 10 days later and she said "oh I thought I would wait until the end of the year." It was March...so I guess the rest of the year doesn't matter to a 9 year old (straight A student, by the way.)
Very disappointed. PS Principal was new that year, we'll see how the school ranking plummets in a few. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
