Powers Ferry Elementary School

Summary:

Powers Ferry Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Marietta, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 413 students. The school is part of the Cobb County School District, which is ranked 52 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being part of a relatively high-performing district, Powers Ferry Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to the Cobb County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessment. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science were significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. This has resulted in the school being ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools for the past several years, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

One potential factor contributing to the school's lower academic performance is its high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 68.35% to 79.18% over the past few years. This indicates a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. When compared to nearby schools in the Cobb County district, such as Sope Creek Elementary School, which consistently ranks in the top 5% of Georgia elementary schools, the academic gap becomes even more apparent. Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, the combination of economic disadvantage and consistently low academic performance suggests that Powers Ferry Elementary School may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address the unique needs of its student population and improve overall academic achievement.

Open Quote Powers Ferry is Cobb County's best kept secret! With low student-teacher ratios, dynamic school administrators, and a positive school culture, Powers Ferry is a fabulous place to learn. This is one of the greatest schools Cobb County has to offer! Close Quote

Open Quote I personally really enjoy how the staff at this school seems to be very friendly and warm to their students and fellow co-workers. When I enter the building, the environment feels warm and welcoming. The office staff/administration is always willing to help parents and students when needed in a friendly manner. Thanks to your staff for making this school feel so inviting! Keep up the great work! Close Quote

Open Quote This school should be ranked one of the worst schools in Cobb County. I have been affiliated with Powers Ferry for almost a decade everything about it is in need of some serious help. The teachers try, however with the lack of parental and administrative help, many find themselves teaching in a defeated mode or looking for a position elsewhere. The principal rules rather than leads. He plays favorites with students, parents, and staff members. The school should put in a revolving door because the student population is far from steady. The attitudes are obnoxious and ungrateful; with expectations of handouts and entitlements. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
