Swint Elementary School

Summary:

Swint Elementary School is a public elementary school in Jonesboro, Georgia, serving 582 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Clayton County School District, which is ranked 168 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Swint Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools over the past decade, with a current ranking of 923 out of 1,248 schools and a 1-star rating. The school's academic performance, as measured by the Milestones Assessment, is significantly below the state and county averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 32.6% of 3rd graders, 17.3% of 4th graders, and 27.8% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 38.4%, 37%, and 48.2%, respectively. The school's mathematics performance is also concerning, with only 47.2% of 3rd graders, 16% of 4th graders, and 13.4% of 5th graders achieving proficiency, compared to the state averages of 45.4%, 48.1%, and 41%.

When comparing Swint Elementary to the nearby schools in the same district, it becomes clear that the academic performance challenges are not unique to Swint. Many of the surrounding schools, such as Tara Elementary, James Jackson Elementary, and Pointe South Elementary, also struggle with low academic proficiency rates and low overall school rankings. However, Kay R Pace Elementary School of the Arts, which is also in the Clayton County district, has significantly higher academic proficiency rates than the other schools, suggesting that targeted interventions and programs can make a positive impact on student achievement.

Open Quote Swint is an excellent school with excellent teachers! All three of my children attended this school. The teachers work hard to ensure students are challenged. Although the school serves a highly transient population, administration and teachers are fully committed to each and every student. I am thankful for the time, effort, and love my children received at Swint. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
