Timothy Elementary School

Summary:

Timothy Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Athens, Georgia, part of the Clarke County School District. Despite facing challenges common to many urban/suburban schools with high poverty rates, Timothy Elementary consistently outperforms the district and state averages on academic assessments and maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio.

Timothy Elementary's academic performance stands out, with students significantly outpacing their peers in Timothy Elementary, Clarke County, and across Georgia on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in 2023-2024, Timothy's 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 53.7%, compared to 29.7% for Clarke County and 38.4% for the state. The school also benefits from a low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 8.9 to 10.1 over the past 3 years, lower than nearby schools in the district.

While Timothy Elementary's performance is commendable, it is outpaced by the nearby Oconee County schools, which are in the top 5% of Georgia elementary schools. For instance, Oconee County Elementary School had 3rd grade ELA and Math proficiency rates over 80% in 2023-2024, compared to 53.7% and 49.3% respectively at Timothy Elementary. This disparity in performance is notable, as the Oconee County schools spend less per student than Timothy Elementary, suggesting that factors beyond just funding, such as district-level policies, community support, and other resources, may be contributing to the gap.

Open Quote I think that Timothy Road Elementary is a very good school. They make the children feel welcome. I started with my daughter in Kindergarten and they immediately realized that she was a little advance and put her in a spectrum class to challenge her. I think they could use a little more programs for the kids, but they are doing the best they can to bring more things in that is extra curricular for the children. I went to school up north. And the experience down here I see is a lot different. But in terms of taking care of your children and having a caring staff. Timothy is definitely that school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
