Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School

Summary:

Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School is a public charter elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Savannah, Georgia, within the Savannah-Chatham County school district. Despite being a Montessori-based school, Coastal Empire has consistently underperformed compared to other elementary schools in the area, ranking in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools over the past decade.

Coastal Empire Montessori's test scores on the Georgia Milestones assessments are significantly below the Savannah-Chatham County and state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 34.5% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 30.7% for the district and 38.4% statewide. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 60.52% to 63.97% over the past few years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. When compared to other nearby elementary schools, such as Heard Elementary School, Coastal Empire Montessori consistently underperforms on state assessments.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $10,191 to $16,829, and a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 16.5 students per teacher, Coastal Empire Montessori has struggled to achieve strong academic outcomes. This raises questions about the effective allocation and utilization of resources to support student learning, especially given the unique challenges faced by the school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Open Quote The statistics of this website are misleading. CEMCS may have "the highest student-to teacher ratio" of several elementary schools in Chatham County, but that's a faulty statistic. Every classroom at CEMCS has a teacher and a teacher's aide, which lowers the student-to-teacher ratio to about 10:1.

Student test scores are increasing every year for this little school, and the students who attend are lightyears ahead of their traditional school peers in social skills, conflict resolution, research, reading, writing, math... all while learning through activity--not worksheets and lecture. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
