Isle of Hope School

Summary:

Isle of Hope School is an elementary school serving 620 students in grades PK-8 in Savannah, Georgia, which is part of the Savannah-Chatham County school district. However, the school consistently underperforms compared to district and state averages on academic assessments, ranking in the bottom quarter of Georgia elementary schools.

Isle of Hope School's academic performance is a significant concern, with only 20.3% of 3rd graders proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 30.7% in the district and 38.4% statewide. Similar gaps are seen in math, science, and social studies. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade, indicating persistent challenges. Additionally, Isle of Hope serves a high-poverty student population, with 65.94% to 81.94% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch over the past few years.

When comparing Isle of Hope to other nearby elementary schools in the Savannah-Chatham district, such as May Howard and Jacob G. Smith, which serve similar demographics, it is clear that Isle of Hope is an outlier in terms of academic performance. Despite spending more per student than the district average, Isle of Hope's outcomes remain poor, raising questions about resource allocation and utilization within the school. However, the school's relatively small class sizes suggest there may be opportunities to implement targeted interventions and support systems to help improve student learning and achievement.

Open Quote Isle of Hope had a long history of being a "good school". I am not a fan of the k-8 model. My elementary students are highly influenced by middle schoolers, and it seems like behavior issues are a BIG problem school wide. I decided that my children will no longer continue their time at Isle of Hope. Close Quote

Open Quote Both my wife and I are alumnus (63-69)(71-77). It was a wonderful school then (Principle, Montene Swann) and has continued to be a hidden favorite to all that have had the pleasure of attending or working there. My son started there in 2006 and this is my daughters first year there. I could not be happier Close Quote

Open Quote This is a great neighborhood school with a lot of experienced teachers. We transferred here from another school and right away you could tell that my child's teacher had a lot higher expectations than the last school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
