Ellis Elementary School

Summary:

Ellis Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Savannah, Georgia, with 441 students enrolled. The school stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, outpacing the Savannah-Chatham County district and the state of Georgia on standardized tests across multiple grade levels and subjects.

Ellis Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.5 and spends more per student ($12,297) compared to nearby schools, which range from $10,125 to $11,935 per student. While the school maintains a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger, its statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 320 out of 1,231 schools in 2013-2014 to 668 out of 1,248 schools in 2023-2024. This suggests the school may be losing ground relative to other elementary schools in Georgia. Interestingly, Savannah Classical Academy Charter School, located about a mile from Ellis Elementary, has consistently high test scores and a 5-star rating, outperforming Ellis and the other nearby schools.

Another notable finding is that Ellis Elementary has a lower free/reduced lunch rate (40.36%) compared to the nearby schools, which range from 92.35% to 99.18%. This suggests the school may serve a more economically advantaged student population than its neighbors, such as Gadsden Elementary, Andrea B. Williams Elementary, and Haven Elementary, all of which have significantly lower test scores across the board.

Open Quote Ellis (Charles Ellis Montessori Academy) has recently become an application only school. It's an old school, very charming. My children have been going for 3 years now. They embrace all of the cultures that are a part of the school and include plenty of opportunities for the school community to get together. I chose to apply for Ellis after learning about the Montessori way of learning. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
