Hesse School

Summary:

Hesse School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Savannah, Georgia, with 1,022 students. It is part of the Savannah-Chatham County school district, which is ranked 128 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Hesse School has seen its statewide ranking fluctuate between 343 and 839 over the past decade, currently ranking 639 out of 1,248 Georgia elementary schools with a 2-star rating.

Hesse School outperforms the district and state averages in several key test score metrics, including Algebra I End of Course, 5th Grade ELA, and 3rd Grade Math. However, it lags behind several nearby schools, such as Jacob G. Smith Elementary and Pulaski Elementary, which have significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA and Math. Hesse School's statewide ranking has also declined from 343 in 2013-2014 to 639 in 2023-2024, indicating a potential trend of declining performance over time.

Hesse School's high percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients (62.72%) suggests that it serves a more economically disadvantaged student population compared to some of the nearby schools, which may contribute to the school's lower overall performance. Despite having lower spending per student compared to some nearby schools, Hesse School's test scores are still higher in certain areas, indicating that factors beyond just funding may be influencing student outcomes.

Open Quote My children have been enrolled in Hesse since Kindergarten. I really like the environment of the school. The leadership is engaged. The teachers are good - really good. My daughter was challenged in math. The teacher began to concentrate and work with her and her math grade has risen to a 91. I can't be more pleased. My child maintains a 90 average and continues to do well. As a parent, I could not be more pleased. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
