Calhoun Middle School stands out for its exceptional performance in Algebra I, consistently achieving a 100% proficiency rate on the Milestones Assessment over the past three years, significantly outperforming the Calhoun City and Georgia state averages. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, ranging from 55.21% to 58.27% in recent years, may be a contributing factor to its academic performance, and further analysis could provide insights into how to address these challenges.

Open Quote Our stint at this school was filled with unacceptable practices. The lack of academic rigor, wasted classroom time with plain tv/movie watching (non-academic) was staggering. After speaking with the Principal, nothing was done, except he did call the frequent movies a "Brain Break". We were disappointed and frustrated to say the least, since CMS is supposed to be some great school. On paper it should be. They have a bright shiny new school. And I'm sure it's great if you have a kids who is dedicated to sports. Otherwise, it was not at all for us. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is a joke. The behavior of the bad students frequently affects the whole school in loss of privileges, the testing is daily, substitute teachers are used many times each week. Kids watch movies instead of receiving proper education, and "education" happens via laptop more often than by an actual taught lesson. We aren't fans at all. It's a sad joke. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
