Westside High School

Summary:

Westside High School is a public high school in Macon, Georgia, serving 1,025 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Bibb County School District, which is ranked 173 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Westside High School has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Georgia high schools over the past decade, with a current ranking of 426 out of 458 schools for the 2023-2024 school year.

Westside High School's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is significantly below the state and county averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.3% of Westside students were proficient or better in American Literature and Composition, compared to 20.6% in Bibb County and 42% statewide. Similarly, only 6% of Westside students were proficient or better in Algebra I, compared to 15.2% in Bibb County and 44% statewide. Westside High School's four-year graduation rate has also been consistently lower than the state and county averages, ranging from 70% to 78.7% over the past five years, compared to the state average of around 83-84%.

When comparing Westside High School to other high schools in the Bibb County district, it becomes clear that Westside is one of the lowest-performing schools. For example, Rutland High School, Howard High School, and Central High School all have significantly higher academic performance, graduation rates, and overall school rankings compared to Westside. The high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch at Westside High School suggests that socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in the school's academic performance, and the fluctuations in per-student spending may also be contributing to the school's challenges in improving student outcomes.

Open Quote Very hard working school. So many changes have been made to keep it a highly respected school. The Football team is AMAZING, As well as the Marching band and other activities. The engineering program is very nice, and all of the teachers at the school know what they are doing. I would like to call out two AMAZING teachers: Mr. Scott and Mr. Womack. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
