SLAM Academy of Atlanta

Summary:

SLAM Academy of Atlanta is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Atlanta, Georgia, with 157 students. The school is part of the State Specialty Schools II- SLAM Academy of Atlanta district, which is ranked 182 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

SLAM Academy of Atlanta consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Georgia elementary schools, with a statewide rank of 1006 out of 1248 schools in 2023-2024 and 1232 out of 1242 schools in 2022-2023. The school's performance on the Milestones Assessment is significantly below the state and Atlanta Public Schools district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, the school has extremely high rates of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, with 100% of students qualifying in 2022-2023, indicating a high-poverty student population. Despite the high per-student spending of $23,458, which is significantly higher than the nearby Cascade Elementary School, R. N. Fickett Elementary School, and other local schools, the school's academic performance remains well below the state and district averages.

The combination of high poverty rates, small school size, and low academic performance suggests that SLAM Academy of Atlanta may be facing significant challenges in providing a quality education to its students. The school's consistently low test scores, which range from 6.3% to 36.4% proficiency in English Language Arts and 6.7% to 36.4% in Mathematics, indicate that the school needs to re-evaluate its strategies and resource allocation to better support student learning and improve outcomes.

Open Quote The school has unruly students. The administration is very unorganized. The owner of the Slam has no idea how a school is run. Pitbull needs to know that this school needs help. The office manager is rude as well. I would never recommend this school to anyone. Once May comes I am gone from this school forever. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
