Oak Hill Middle School

Summary:

Oak Hill Middle School is a public middle school serving 986 students in grades 6-8 in Milledgeville, Georgia. The school is part of the Baldwin County School District, which is ranked 172 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Oak Hill Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia middle schools, receiving a 1-star rating as well.

One of the key factors contributing to Oak Hill Middle School's low performance is its significantly below-average test scores across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 17% of 6th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 41.6%. The math proficiency rates were even lower, with just 8.6% of 6th graders, 19% of 7th graders, and 18.3% of 8th graders scoring proficient or better, far below the state averages. Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 89.35% to 92.93% over the past few years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When comparing Oak Hill Middle School to nearby schools like Wilkinson County Middle School, Putnam County Middle School, and Gray Station Middle School, it becomes clear that Oak Hill is significantly underperforming. These nearby schools have higher test scores, lower free/reduced lunch rates, and higher per-student spending, suggesting that Oak Hill may be facing more significant challenges in terms of resources and student demographics. Addressing these underlying issues will likely be crucial for improving student outcomes at Oak Hill Middle School.

Open Quote This place is terrible. My son went here, within the first 3 days he got covid. The school did not care and kept forwarding my wife and I to other people to explain it to. After his quarantine was we were told he had to come back to school. He went back and within a week he had covid again. Come to find out he was testing positive the entire time since he first was exposed. The school did not care nor contacted us. I just received a call yesterday and it had been over A MONTH since he had been at that school, "claiming they were concerned about my son's absences, and they had to turn it over to a truancy officer. IT TOOK THESE PEOPLE A MONTH to contact us about my son missing school.... My wife and I had already emailed the board of education to let them know we were going to homeschool our son instead of sending him back to this incompetent school. Literally nobody knows what they're doing except one of my sons computer teachers. If your child caught covid, these folks are playing ignorant and acting like they doing know what kids are getting it and DEFINITELY aren't telling the parents when there children are exposed! If your kid goes here and you don't have another option im very sorry. If you do have another option, I would take it as fast as possible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
