The Kindezi School

Summary:

The Kindezi School is a public charter elementary and middle school located in Atlanta, Georgia, serving grades K-8 with a total enrollment of 427 students. The school is part of the Atlanta Public Schools district, which is ranked 149 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The Kindezi School has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from a high of 182 out of 1,231 Georgia elementary schools in 2013-2014 to its current rank of 928 out of 1,248 in 2023-2024.

The Kindezi School's test scores on the Georgia Milestones Assessment are consistently lower than the Atlanta Public Schools district and the state of Georgia averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts ranged from 24.2% to 33.3%, compared to 31.3% to 41.9% for the district and 37% to 48.2% for the state. In Mathematics, the school's proficiency rates were even lower, ranging from 5.6% to 37.8%, compared to 23.7% to 39% for the district and 34.7% to 48.1% for the state. Additionally, the Kindezi School has a 100% free and reduced lunch rate, indicating that all of its students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, which is significantly higher than the state average.

Despite the Kindezi School's lower student-teacher ratio, ranging from 6.3 to 8.9 students per teacher over the past three years, and its higher per-student spending, between $18,468 and $19,474, the school's performance has declined over time. This suggests that the school may be facing unique challenges or that its educational approach may not be as effective as those of its neighboring schools, such as City View Elementary School, Cascade Elementary School, and KIPP Soul Primary, which have higher student-teacher ratios and lower per-student spending but better academic outcomes.

Open Quote I am a parent of a rising 6th grader at Kindezi. Kindezi is now a K-6 school and will eventually be a K-8 school at the start of the 2015/16 school year.

It is a wonderful school. Class sizes average 6-8 per class so all children get individual attention. Kindezi has high expectations for all children and all are expected to learn and will be given any assistance they need to ensure they are on grade level or advancing at an appropriate pace for those who come in above grade level.

It was released that our 5th graders last year at Kindezi outscored all other 5th graders in the APS school district, including top performing schools in Buckhead. If you check the 2013 5th grade CRCT results our students passed 100% of Reading, Math, and Social Studies, and 96% were proficient in Science.

There is no such thing as an achievement gap at Kindezi, though most of our students are black, we also have more diversity at our school than practically any other on the Westside of Atlanta due to parents choosing to send their children to our school versus private schools. Kindezi is a public charter school and they provide sports teams along with after school enrichment for students. I always tell people that with the individualized instruction method, the use of differentiation, project based learning, and wonderful, caring teachers, that Kindezi is like a free private school.

Any time I ask my child over the course of the 4 years he has been at Kindezi, "did you learn anything today?" He always tells me something new they discussed at school. They have recess everyday, which even as a middle schooler, he loves. They use the NWEA MAP assessment to ensure that Kindezi students are competitive with other schools in other states as CRCT standards are lower than other nationally based assessments and Kindezi is well above average on MAP. My son scored in the 90th percentiles for both math and reading on MAP.

If you are a parent looking for a small, family like school that your child can remain in from K-8 and where they will finish their text books every year, have recess, have educational field trips, caring teachers, and no bullying whatsoever in the school (this is taken VERY seriously) then we will welcome you to the Kindezi family. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
