The John Hope-Charles Walter Hill Elementary Schools

Summary:

The John Hope-Charles Walter Hill Elementary Schools is a public elementary school located in Atlanta, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 369 students. The school is part of the Atlanta Public Schools district, which is ranked 149 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The John Hope-Charles Walter Hill Elementary Schools consistently underperforms compared to the Atlanta Public Schools district and the state of Georgia in Milestones Assessment test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 27.5%, compared to 36.2% for Atlanta Public Schools and 38.4% for Georgia. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 100% in the 2022-2023 and 2020-2021 school years, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

When comparing The John Hope-Charles Walter Hill Elementary Schools to the nearby schools in the same district, such as Morningside Elementary and Mary Lin Elementary, it is clear that the school is underperforming significantly, with much higher test scores, higher school rankings, and lower percentages of students receiving free/reduced lunch. The school's consistently low performance, as evidenced by its statewide ranking and 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, suggests that it is struggling to provide a high-quality education to its students, which may be due to factors such as its high-poverty student population and lower per-student spending compared to some of the higher-performing nearby schools.

Open Quote This is a great school. There is a new Principal (Mrs. Wheeler) and she is turning this school around. She is doing an excellent job. The school had a 20 point increase in last years test scores. Highest increase in the state. Go meet her and see for yourself. We did - before we sent our kids there. Couldn't be more pleased with the teachers and administrators. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
