Berta Weathersbee Elementary School

Summary:

Berta Weathersbee Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lagrange, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 263 students. Despite being part of the Troup County School District, which is ranked 103 out of 203 districts in Georgia, Berta Weathersbee has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Georgia elementary schools, with a 1-star or 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade.

Berta Weathersbee Elementary significantly underperforms compared to the Troup County and Georgia state averages on standardized tests, with only 20-30% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, compared to 34-48% for the district and state. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 94-95% in recent years, much higher than the 40-94% range of nearby schools like Hogansville Elementary, West Point Elementary, and Hillcrest Elementary.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($9,584 to $11,863) than the nearby schools ($9,078 to $10,712), Berta Weathersbee has not been able to translate this additional funding into improved academic achievement. The school's persistent low performance and the disconnect between spending and outcomes suggest deep-rooted challenges that have not been adequately addressed, likely requiring a comprehensive, data-driven approach that considers the school's unique socioeconomic context and adopts evidence-based best practices from higher-performing schools in the district.

Open Quote Our family was new to the area for the school year of 09-10 and have to say that I was not happy when my children were drafted to Berta Weathersbee. After one year in the school, I am very happy with the principal, teachers. Mrs. Whitley was a great 2nd grade teacher. My son has also enjoyed 5th grade with Mrs. Buchanan. They have several programs at the school which my children participated in. Chorus was fabulous and loved their performance. My child also participated in a school play. They teach kids great qualities. The teachers in 5th grade worked hard so that the kids learned their skills and were able to pass the CRCT. My son passed the CRCT!! This was a smaller school so our children got more attention which always helps!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
