River Springs Middle School

Summary:

River Springs Middle School is a public middle school located in Orange City, Florida, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,249 students. The school is part of the Volusia District, which is ranked 36 out of 68 districts in Florida and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

While River Springs Middle School outperforms the Volusia District and Florida state averages in some End-of-Course (EOC) exams, particularly in Geometry and Civics, it lags behind several nearby schools in the Seminole District, such as Rock Lake Middle School and Sanford Middle School, which consistently achieve higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates. Additionally, River Springs Middle School has a higher percentage of White students (57.41%) compared to the nearby schools, which have more diverse student populations, and the school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (49.48% in 2022-2023).

The high chronic absenteeism rates at River Springs Middle School (29.6% in 2022-2023) are a concern and may be contributing to the lower performance in English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments. Despite the higher per-student spending at River Springs Middle School ($8,388 in 2022-2023), the school's performance lags behind some of the nearby schools, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to improving student outcomes. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and examining how resources are allocated and utilized could provide valuable insights to help River Springs Middle School improve its overall performance and provide a more equitable education for its students.

Open Quote I have to say I am truly disappointed in this school. There is no communication between the school and parents. If I call the school to express any concern or a complaint, you would think the principal would contact the parent back to address issues but that is not the case. The school year is drawing to a close and I don't believe I have seen the principal one time throughout the school year and I am at the school daily dropping off and picking up my child. It's almost as though the principal intentionally hides and avoids the parents. Any emails to teachers generally go left unanswered by staff. Also, I am utterly disgusted at the amount of bullying and violence that goes on at this school. My child has been hit on numerous occasions. Teachers turn a blind eye to the problem children and, when I report it, I'm constantly told that there is a "no hitting" policy and the school has a bully awareness program. If a student tries to report being hit, the staff has a tendency to refuse to listen and just 'sentence' the students to detention (even the child who was being hit and not hitting others). I don't see any potential for this school without new admin and staff changes first. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
