Indian River Elementary School

Summary:

Indian River Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Edgewater, Florida, serving 613 students in grades PK-5 and is part of the Volusia school district.

Indian River Elementary has some unique characteristics compared to nearby schools. It has a significantly higher percentage of white students (81.4%) than the more diverse student populations at schools like Horizon Elementary School and Sweetwater Elementary School. The school also has consistently higher chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 27.4% to 30.1% in recent years, which is higher than the nearby schools. However, Indian River Elementary generally performs better than the Volusia district and Florida state averages in English Language Arts and Math proficiency, particularly in 3rd and 4th grades.

Additionally, Indian River Elementary has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 61.01% to 69.14% in recent years, compared to the nearby schools. The school also has a higher per-student spending, ranging from $9,425 to $10,348 in recent years. These factors suggest that the school serves a population with lower socioeconomic status and may require additional resources and support to address the high chronic absenteeism rates and continue supporting student learning and achievement.

Open Quote Huge parent involvement. All my sons teachers have been amazing. We are pleased overall but wish there was more advanced skills taught and nutrition education. PTA events are fun but they sell junk...soda...chips...little Debbie cakes :( ugh. I still love the school though. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
