Villages Charter School

Summary:

Villages Charter School is a public charter school located in The Villages, Florida, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 3,473 students. The school is part of the Sumter District, which is ranked 19th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Villages Charter School stands out for its exceptional academic performance, consistently outperforming the Sumter District and the state of Florida in various standardized test scores, including EOC (End-of-Course) exams, Statewide Science assessments, and FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) English Language Arts and Math assessments. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Villages Charter School had significantly higher proficiency rates compared to the Sumter District and Florida in subjects like Algebra 1 (77% vs. 63% and 55%), Geometry (77% vs. 64% and 53%), and Civics (85% vs. 79% and 67%). Additionally, the school has maintained an exceptional four-year graduation rate, ranging from 98.9% to 100% over the past five school years, and a lower chronic absenteeism rate compared to the state average.

The student population at Sumter Prep Academy, a nearby school, has a significantly different demographic, with a higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students, and much lower academic performance compared to Sumter County Virtual Instruction Program, Sumter Virtual Franchise, and Nonschool Exceptional Education, which are much smaller in size and serve a predominantly White student population. The high spending per student and low student-teacher ratio at Villages Charter School may contribute to its exceptional academic outcomes, making it a model for other schools to emulate.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
